Challenge of A Lifetime: How To Make a Website Design that Easy to Use?
December 13, 2019
We are all judges, the judges of how good or bad a website design really is.
“Bounce rate is too high!” said someone with bad website design. Users tend to enter web and immediately get out of there when they cannot spot something interesting in the website. While we see with our biased website slash business owner eyes, our website design may be just fine. So why did they say the design is bad? What makes a website bad while it already has flashy and stunning images in it?
When it comes to website design, it is not always about graphic design. Well, graphic still plays a big role but it is not all about it. Most of the cases appear at the surface, the website with a high bounce rate has a rather tacky graphic design in it. A good, or we may say, user-friendly website design is more likely determined by its UI and UX design.
So what exactly is UI and UX thing, and why do they play important parts in making a good website design?
The difference between UI and UX
No, they are not merely slang words to make people look cool when they say, “Oh, these apps have terrible UI and UX”. UX Design stands for User Experience Design, while UI Design refers to User Interface Design. People often juxtaposes these two elements in making a good website design, but they are actually two separate different things.
The following is found from Wikipedia:
- User experience design is the process of enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty by improving the usability, ease of use, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the customer and the product.
- User interface design is the design of user interfaces for machines and software, such as computers, home appliances, mobile devices, and other electronic devices, with the focus on maximizing usability and the user experience. The goal of user interface design is to make the user’s interaction as simple and efficient as possible, in terms of accomplishing user goals (user-centered design).
If you have not seen it clearly, then you are not the only one!
Think about a sculpture! UX is the inner frame that constructs the sculpture, making it stands, poses and functions as the sculptor wanted. While UI is the cement or concrete on the outer layer, making it looks LIKE a sculpture. See it better now?
A good product starts with a good UX and followed by a good UI. Both are inseparable in making the product, or in this case the website, good!
Making a good UX Design
Making a good UX in a website, or in another word, making a website user-friendly is not an easy task! Lots of research about digital and cognitive behavior about human needs to be conducted before taking the step and beginning to design UX. A good UX helps users navigate to one page to another without causing any confusion.
Some important elements in a good UX design include how good is your landing page, how easy it is to understand and absorb user into your website experience, the clear and obvious navigation, and so forth. As said earlier, a good UX Design is not the job that can be done in one night. It requires deep research
Making a good UI Design
A good UI design depends on several elements: what is your product, who is your customer, and how do you want your customer to use your product. An e-commerce website has different UI design with dating websites. That is why you have to conduct some research as well before designing the UI of your website.
This is the time when you communicate with your customer using visual elements. This is also the time for you to add some features on your website such as swipe left for a match (Tinder), shopping cart (e-commerce website), or add friends (social media platform). Just keep in mind, whatever you want to add on your future website.
